Square for Retail: the easy way to ring up sales and keep stock straight
Want it set up right the first time? Find a local pro who sets up shop registers and inventory.
Our own short explainer -- what Square for Retail is built to do, then the process step by step. Square has a free plan, with Plus at $49/mo per location.
The short version:
- What it is: a register and inventory system for a shop floor, with a free online store that shares the same stock count.
- Why owners like it: you can set it up yourself in an afternoon, and the free tier lets you start without a monthly bill.
- What it costs: Free $0/mo, Plus $49/mo per location, Premium $149/mo per location, plus a card fee on each sale (2.6% + 15¢ in person on Free, down to 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium).
- The AI part: an assistant that answers plain questions about your numbers and nudges you when it is time to reorder. Helper-level, not a forecasting engine.
- Suits: a small shop that sells mostly in person and wants the least fuss. If online is your main channel, Shopify POS fits better.
Common questions
How much does Square for Retail cost?
Square Free is $0/mo per location, Plus is $49/mo per location, and Premium is $149/mo per location. On top of the plan you pay a card fee on each sale, from 2.6% + 15¢ in person on Free down to 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium. Confirm current pricing at squareup.com.
Is the free plan enough to run a small shop?
For a one-person shop with a simple catalog, often yes. Free rings up sales, tracks basic stock, and takes cards with no monthly fee. You move to deeper inventory and staff tools on Plus mostly when your SKU count and your team grow.
Does Square for Retail have AI?
Yes, some. There is an assistant you can ask plain questions about your sales, and it suggests when to reorder based on your history. It can draft item descriptions too. It is helper-level AI, not full demand forecasting, so check its suggestions.
Can Square handle both my shop floor and an online store?
Yes. You get a free online store that shares one catalog and stock count with your register. It suits a shop that sells mostly in person. If online is your main channel, Shopify POS is the better shape.
See it in action
What does Square for Retail do for a shop?
It runs the front counter. A customer brings items up, you scan or tap them in, take a card, and hand over a receipt. That is the "point of sale" job, and Square has done it for corner shops for years.
Behind the counter it keeps a live count of what you carry. Every item gets an SKU -- a short code for that exact product -- and when you sell one, the count drops by one. That is how you stop finding out you are out of a best-seller only when a customer asks for it.
You also get a free online store that shares the same catalog. Sell the last blue mug on the floor and the website shows it as gone too. For a shop that lives on its counter but wants a little online business, that shared stock count is the quiet win.
What does the AI actually do here?
Square added a built-in assistant. You can ask it plain questions -- "what were my ten best sellers in July?" or "which items haven't moved in 60 days?" -- and get an answer without building a report. That alone saves the Sunday-night spreadsheet session.
It also watches your sales pace and flags when stock is running low, so reorder time is a nudge, not a guess. And it can draft a product description when you add a new item. None of this is deep demand forecasting. Think of it as a sharp assistant that has read your numbers, not a crystal ball. You still make the call.
What does Square for Retail cost?
In late 2025 Square dropped its old separate retail subscription and rolled those tools into three plans that cover the whole business:
- Square Free -- $0/mo per location. Rings up sales, basic stock tracking, the free online store, and no monthly fee. In-person card rate 2.6% + 15¢.
- Square Plus -- $49/mo per location. Adds deeper inventory, reorder tools, loyalty, marketing, and full staff permissions. In-person rate drops to 2.5% + 15¢.
- Square Premium -- $149/mo per location. Adds advanced reporting and 24/7 phone support, at the lowest in-person rate, 2.4% + 15¢.
"Per location" matters: two shops on Plus is $98/mo, not $49. The card fee is separate and applies on every plan. For a lot of small shops the free plan is a real starting point, and one busy Saturday of card sales dwarfs the $49 upgrade once you need it.

Who is it a good fit for?
Square is the pick when you want to start today with no help and no big bill. A single-owner boutique, a gift shop, a market stall going year-round -- these are its home turf. The hardware is cheap, the app is friendly, and PCI compliance (the card-security rules every shop that takes cards must follow) is handled for you at no extra charge.
It scales up fine to a couple of locations and a few staff. Past that, when inventory gets deep and you need real buying and forecasting muscle, you start feeling the ceiling.
Where Square isn't the answer
Strong if…
- You want to set it up yourself and start selling the same day.
- You sell mostly on the shop floor with some online orders on the side.
- You want a free way to begin and to grow into paid tools only when you need them.
- You would rather Square handle card security than think about it.
Maybe not if…
- Online is your main channel -- Shopify POS is built online-first.
- You carry deep, seasonal inventory and want real demand forecasting -- that is Lightspeed Retail's strength.
- You run several stores with heavy buying and vendor management -- Heartland Retail leans that way.
- You process a high dollar volume and the per-sale card fee starts to outweigh the low monthly price.
